Want to start a podcast? Podcasting can be an excellent way to expand your digital audience and grow your practice. Podcasting is cheap, easy to do and reaches a new audience for your practice. In addition, more people listen to a podcast now than ever before. Podcasts are the largest growing medium across the Internet.
This post corresponds to our latest podcast episode of “Russ and Randy” – a podcast on Healthcare and Medical Internet Marketing. We hope you like ” Easy Tips to Start Your Own Podcast.” You can find us on iTunes …and now, ReachMD.com!
Starting a podcast is simple and may get your practice noticed by a brand new audience. Podcasting can be a great alternative or an adjunct to your digital marketing strategy. It does not require the purchase of any expensive equipment and you probably have everything you need to get started…right now.
There are 3 simple steps: recording, editing and uploading.
Podcast with Your Smartphone
You need a microphone and a digital recording device. That’s it!
Record to your smartphone, computer or external digital device using a connected microphone. Microphones can range in price and quality, but we’d recommend starting inexpensively and working your way up as you get used to recording.
You will be surprised at the quality of sound produced with a simple lavalier microphone connected to your smartphone. You can record directly to your phone using a pre-installed app (e.g. Voice Memos – Apple) or download a recording app.
I use the free version of “Voice Recorder” (TapMedia, Ltd). It is easy to use and I can automatically save my recordings to Dropbox.
I use this double lavalier with splitter to record interviews with my iPhone.
Recording Podcast: Russ and Randy
As we have progressed, we have become more finicky about sound quality. I used to record with a USB microphone connected to my iMac. Presently, I use an external recording device (H4nPro) connected to a microphone (Knox Cardioid) to produce a really excellent quality recording.
Use Audacity for Editing
After recording, you will want to do some basic editing. At the very least, you’ll want to trim the beginning and end of the recording session to remove unwanted dead space. You can erase any long pauses within the episode, too.
As you progress, you may get fancier with your editing and may want to add an intro and outro to your episodes. Use Audacity, the 800 pound gorilla of audio editing.
Don’t waste time comparing editing programs. Audacity is free and does an excellent job.
Upload to Your Podcast Host
Just as you need to choose a host for your website, you will need to choose a host for your podcast. Podcast hosting services, such as Libsyn, store (host) your audio files and deliver them via RSS to iTunes. We initially started with $5/month plan.
All in all, you can start a podcast as cheaply as $5/month using the microphone on your earbuds and your smartphone. As you get more experienced, you will want to make improvements. My present office setup is still less than $250!
