How do Search Engines Work?
Whenever we query the Internet, whenever we “Google something,” we are performing a search. Whether it’s movie tickets, directions or finding a doctor, we “Google” to find the answer to a question or solution to a problem.
This is the definition of “Search.” Hence the “search engines” help you find answers to your questions by “searching” the Internet for the best and most relevant answer.
All search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.) are similar in that they crawl, read or index every page on the Internet. Every text file on your website is indexed and logged on the search engines computers.
Files containing text include Word documents, .pdf files, Power Point presentations and text articles published on your website.
All search engines have an algorithm (formula) to decide which webpage will best answer your search query resulting in pages of webpages which might answer your question.
Only the best and most relevant pages end up in the “Top 10.”
Search Engine Optimization – What Google Wants
For any healthcare, medical or other website to rank, the practices and techniques of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) must be used.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is basically the art of understanding what criteria search engines use in their algorithms to rank webpages. Period.
In short, what we will find is that the content of your site is the most heavily weighted factor in getting your website to rank highly.
It’s your content (articles, posts, blog articles) that separate you from your competition. The better your content, the higher the ranking.
The goal is to optimize (perform SEO techniques) on your content to maximize it’s value for the search engines. With proper optimization, you have the ability to “tell” the search engines exactly why and how your content is better than others.
There’s a Part 2 coming next week.
