This episode walks you through the very simple (and inexpensive) steps of starting your healthcare podcast. A podcast uses an new medium (compared to your website) to reach a different audience and gives you the opportunity to reach new patients. Podcasting is the fastest growing medium and reaches across all generations.
This post corresponds to our latest podcast episode of “Russ and Randy” – a podcast on Healthcare and Medical Internet Marketing. We hope you like “The 3 Simple Steps to Starting Your Podcast.” You can find us on iTunes …and now, ReachMD.com!
Russ and I started over two years ago. We review the 3 necessary steps to get your show started using equipment you already own. There’s really nothing to buy!
Recording Your Audio
Podcasting is recorded audio files. The easiest way to record an “episode” is to use your smartphone. The voice quality is excellent and does not require you to purchase a microphone. If you were to purchase a microphone, consider an inexpensive lavalier mic.
While both Apple and Android phones have pre-loaded voice recording apps, both of us prefer using a separate app for recording. We have found that using a separate app (e.g. Voice Recorder or Voice Recorder Pro) allows you to more easily transfer the recorded audio file to your computer.
Audio files are typically larger than text files which compose your website.
We use Libsyn.com to host “Russ and Randy.” Libsyn, and others, specialize in 3rd party podcast hosting. There are many advantages to hosting your podcast separately from your website (bandwidth, slowing down website), etc. Make sure your host creates an RSS feed for your podcast (more later).
We initially hosted for $5/month and increased our subscription to $15/month. The limiting factor is related to the amount of data/month we can upload. We can now publish our episodes without exceeding our data limit.
iTunes Store Podcast Directory
iTunes is the largest podcast directory.
Once your hosting account is established, you will want to submit your new podcast to the iTunes Store for inclusion in their directory. This a simple “one and done” process. It basically requires your submitting your RSS from the host (i.e. Libsyn in our case) to connect with iTunes.
There is no cost to being included on iTunes.
There are very few healthcare podcasts produced by healthcare professionals. It’s an affordable way to reach a new audience. Become an early adopter. Remember, if we can do it, so can you!
