Andrew Doan, MD, PhD was one of the first docs I met who was not only familiar with SEO and social media, but had already successfully integrated these techniques to his practice of Ophthalmology. He has also founded a verified doctor review business, Credential Protection. He is author of “Hooked on Games” – available at Amazon.
This interview was recorded “live” at the American Academy of Ophthalmology at McCormick Place in Chicago, October 2016. Andy and I chose a secluded hall on the side of the convention hall.
This post corresponds to our latest podcast episode of “Russ and Randy” – a podcast on Healthcare and Medical Internet Marketing. We hope you like “Interview with Dr. Andrew Doan.”

During his residency, Andy was the webmaster of a clinical website he ran for the Ophthalmology department of the Iowa University hospital. Using the content of daily “grand rounds,” he quickly built up traffic to the site and was soon getting “millions” of hits from all over the world.
Dr. Doan was an early adopter to understand the power of search engine optimization (SEO). By publishing fresh content, the sites rankings continued to rise as did the resultant traffic.
Reputation Management
Early in his practice in Temecula, California, Andy received some bogus and unsubstantiated negative reviews online. Listen how he dealt with these reviews and how they served as a catalyst for him to create an online reputation management company.
Andy has founded “Credential Protection.” Credential Protection is an objective verified review site designed to maximize your online reputation. Credential Protection has a unique system of requesting reviews and then posting only verified (legitimate) reviews on their clients’ websites.
In addition, because of the unique way in which the reviews are stored, and optimized (SEO), on a separate server (Credential Protection’s servers), the testimonials enjoy high rankings themselves.
3 Legs to Internet Marketing
Andy and I talk about his best practices and recommendations for you to be successful with your digital marketing plan. There are 3 digital arms to your success;
- Website
- Engagement
- Reputation Management
These days all 3 are probably equally important. The website can draw traffic and capture attention. It allows you to make your personal statement and educate in your unique fashion. Websites which blog (frequently add content) engage the readers by asking for comments. Engagement is vital to patient conversion.
Finally, in the modern digital world, we can’t ignore your online reputation. As Andy says, if you ignore reputation management, “you could have high ranking websites with bad reviews.”
